Florence Barrett is a BC based Costume Designer for theatre, film and TV.
Florence Barrett is a distinguished costume designer known for her work in film, television and theatre. Celebrated for her ability to merge authenticity with narrative impact, her designs bring characters to life while enhancing the visual storytelling of each project. With a keen eye for detail and a deep understanding of character development through wardrobe, Barrett has made significant contributions to various critically acclaimed projects.
Trained at both Red Deer College (theatre diploma) and Simon Fraser University (Bachelor of Fine Arts in Production and Design) Florence has continued practicing her craft her across Canada, with a strong focus on the Westcoast based productions.
Coming from the world of theatre, Florence has always worked with a strong focus on collaboration and determination and brings these skill sets to her work in the world of film and TV.
Hailing from Fernie, BC, Florence has a particular passion for crafting costumes for shows set in small-towns delivering an authentic view point. She loves exploring the cultural and environmental details unique to these communities, creating designs that resonate deeply with the setting and characters.
Barrett's expertise also lies in her ability to merge historical accuracy with contemporary sensibilities, creating costumes that are both visually stunning and narratively powerful. Her work not only enhances the aesthetic of the films and shows she contributes to but also helps actors fully inhabit their roles.
Some of her film credits include A Nice Indian Boy, The Boy in the Woods, Borderline, The Island Between Tides, Float, Portraits from a Fire, Sheltering Season, Adventures in Public School, Summer of ’84, and Eadweard. Florence’s meticulous craftsmanship and creative vision continue to make her a vital force in the industry.
Florence has worked on over 100 theatre projects, with focus on costume design. She has also worked as Head wardrobe on internationally touring theatre productions, as well as a backstage dresser.
She has received numerous awards for both her design and technical work in theatre, a highlight being the Jessie’s Critics Choice for Innovation Award in both 2010 and 2011 for her work with theatre company Leaky Heaven Circus and again in 2015 for her work with Theatre Conspiracy.
